Introduction
I am an A/r/tographer which stands for artist, researcher and teacher and is also known as a Creative Practice Researcher. My Ph.D. dissertation, “Developing a Learning Model for Online Film Education,” entailed the development of a learning model that allows students to produce films online and in a virtual world using a process called machinima, with a goal of helping to democratize film education. I engaged in research by directing and producing two films and developing an online film production curriculum. The first film was a 17-minute live-action/machinima hybrid film, Romeo & Juliette16, shot in Tokyo and Toronto, and the second, a feature documentary about the ‘making-of’ of the machinima portion, which engages with film and media academics about the affordances of this new medium.
